Import Fonts from a Folder

Import Fonts from a Folder

Already have font files on your server, for example fonts you uploaded by FTP or a folder of fonts that came with a theme? Point Font Hero at the folder and it finds every font file, shows you the families, weights and styles it detected, and imports the ones you pick.

The font files stay exactly where they are. Font Hero does not copy or move them.

How to import a folder

  1. Go to Font Hero > Folder import
  2. Enter the folder path. Use an absolute path, or a path relative to wp-content (for example wp-content/uploads/my-fonts)
  3. Click Scan
  4. Review the list. Each family has its faces underneath, with weight, style and file formats
  5. Untick anything you do not want, and fix a family name, weight or style if needed
  6. Click Import selected

Your fonts now appear in Font Hero > Fonts, ready to use in your builder or theme.

What Font Hero detects

Font Hero reads .woff2, .woff, .ttf and .otf files, including subfolders. For each file it detects:

  • Family name
  • Weight (100 to 900, and values in between)
  • Style (normal or italic)
  • Variable fonts, with their weight range (shown as Variable 400-700)

The same face in several formats, for example a .woff2 and a .woff of Inter Bold, is grouped into one face with several files.

Some .woff2 files cannot be read directly on every server. In that case Font Hero uses a matching .ttf or .woff next to it, or reads the file name (for example Inter-BoldItalic.woff2). These faces are marked Detected from file name, so check the weight and style before importing.

Status of each face

Label Meaning
New Not in Font Hero yet. Selected by default.
Up to date Already imported and the file has not changed.
File changed The file was replaced. Importing updates the face.
Moved The file was renamed or moved. Importing updates the path.
Link to file The face exists in Font Hero but was added before folder import. Importing links it to the file.
Cannot import The file is outside your WordPress folder, so a browser cannot load it. The reason is shown.

Updating a face keeps it in place, so fonts you already use in Bricks or other builders keep working. A family name is not changed when you update existing faces.

Rescan later

Add new weights to the folder, replace a file, or rename it. Run Scan again, or click Rescan imported folders to check every folder you imported from in one go.

If a font file no longer exists, it appears under Files no longer found. Those faces are selected by default, and Import selected removes them from Font Hero. If a family has no faces left, the family is removed too. Your files on disk are never touched.

Good to know

  • Files stay in place. Moving or deleting the source folder breaks the font on your site. Deleting a font in Font Hero only removes it from Font Hero, never the files.
  • Folder location. Font files must be inside your WordPress folder so browsers can load them by URL.
  • Large folders. A scan reads up to 500 files. If a folder has more, scan a more specific subfolder.
  • Multisite. Imports from the network admin are available to every site. A single site cannot change or remove network fonts.
